Hanging this gallery has been Jock McFadyen RA’s first
experience of working on the Summer Exhibition. His first idea was to
concentrate on the subject of ‘radical landscape’, but during the selection
process he found himself gravitating towards works not strictly in this
category. He broadened his interpretation of the theme, so that although the
environment still has a very dominant presence, there is more of ‘an idea of
Britain now’, with the hang departing from landscape in several places.
McFadyen has enjoyed the experience, and having followed his own instincts and responses to the submitted pieces, he is adamant that he ‘loves all the work’ he has hung in this gallery.
